Our mission as a Firewise Community is to protect people and property in communities at risk from wildfire.
Please contact our Firewise coodinator to report hours you work clearing brush on your property or along our neighborhood roadways so that we can continue to qualify as a Firewise Community.
Wildland fires can occur in residential development areas without disastrous loss of life, property and resources. Knowing how to protect your home, property and neighborhood from loss is the first step in becoming truly “Firewise.”
The Firewise program is a project of NFPA: The National Fire Protection Association. This program encourages neighbors to work together to reduce their wildfire risk. Communities can reduce the risk of loss by employing wildfire mitigation practices at the individual lot level as well as community wide.
More than 1,028 communities have been recognized as Firewise Communities by taking action to reduce the threat of wildfire. Canyon Ridge Springs was recognized as a Firewise community in 2010.
The primary goal for Firewise landscaping is fuel reduction – limiting flammable vegetation and materials surrounding the home. The Home Ignition Zone is that 100-200 foot area around a house.
Zone 1 encircles the structure and all its attachments (wooden decks, fences, etc.) for at least 30 feet on all sides. “If it’s attached to the house, it’s a part of the house.”
Zone 2 is 30 to 100 feet from the home. Firewood and butane should be stored 50-60 feet away. Plants should be low-growing, well irrigated, and of low flammability.
Zone 3 is 100 to 200 feet from the home. Keep plants thinned, ignitable brush removed, and low limbs cut 6-10 feet from ground. Due to hilly topography, the distances to mitigate for radiant heat may range between 100 to 200 feet from the structure.
